Objectives and Topics
On the 9th of November 2010, the Regulation (EU) No 911/2010, on the European Earth monitoring programme (GMES) and its initial operations (2011 to 2013) has come into force. With this regulation, GMES is becoming operational. In this context, the Bulgarian government, under the aegis of the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Mr. Boyko Borissov and with the support of the European Commissioner Mrs. Kristalina Georgieva and in coordination with the European Commission, is organising the "Second Earth Observation-GMES Operational Capacity Workshop" in Sofia on the 17th and 18th of March 2011.
The key objective of the GMES Sofia workshop is to raise awareness on the European Earth monitoring programme (GMES), and to foster information exchange among the different stakeholders.
Specific objectives are to:
- display the existing capacity and running GMES activities already realised especially in the field of security and crisis management, and risk monitoring;
- demonstrate the potential impact of GMES services on local and regional administrations and generic users;
- present the role of industry for development and implementation of GMES services
- launch vision for development of regional centers for integrated security and risk management as part of an Euro-Mediterranean network
We do believe that the Second GMES Sofia event will be an opportunity for all participants to be further involved in the European Earth monitoring programme (GMES) and will contribute to its successful implementation in support to the realisation of the global objective:
Observing our planet for a safer world.
